Laurie Anderson, The Language of the Future / Selected Works 1971 – 2013

Adelaide Festival 2013
March 1 – April 19, 2013

The Adelaide Festival and the Anne & Gordon Samstag Museum of Art present Laurie Anderson’s first solo exhibition in Australia. For the opening evening of both the festival and the artist’s solo show, Anderson performed her iconic Duets on Ice. Originally realized in New York during the 1970s, Duets on Ice features the artist wearing ice skates frozen into blocks of ice while continuously playing the violin. The performance comes to an end only when the ice has completely melted away.

The Language of the Future, on view at the Samstag through April 19th, exhibits a selection of works made by the artist between 1971 and 2013, including a recreation of The Electric Chair, an installation from the late 70s. Also on view are a series of recent photographs and video installations, including The Swimmer, a multi-channel video installation, which is projected downwardly onto a low relief of shredded books.
