Leslie Hewitt in collaboration with Bradford Young, Untitled (Structures)

Lofoten International Art Festival
September 6 – 29, 2013

Untitled (Structures), Leslie Hewitt’s recent film collaboration with cinematographer Bradford Young, will be presented at this year’s Lofoten International Art Festival. Titled ‘Just what is it that makes today so familiar, so uneasy?’ and curated by Anne Szefer Karlsen, Bassam El Baroni, and Eva González-Sancho, LIAF 2013 will be on view from September 6th through the 29th in Svolvær and Kabelvåg in the Lofoten archipelago in Norway.

Untitled (Structures) was originally commissioned by the Menil Collection, Houston, in collaboration with the Des Moines Art Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. The collaborative project was a response to the Adelaide de Menil Carpenter and Edmund Carpenter photography collection at the Menil Collection. The collection consists of photographs by Bob Adelman, Leonard Freed, Bruce Davidson, Danny Lyon, Dan Budnick and Elliott Erwitt, which document aspects of the Civil Rights era. Inspired by the epic nature of the collection and critical of the gaps and silences in the collection regarding the history it represents, Hewitt in collaboration with Young worked on Untiteld (Structures). This film-based project spanned two years of research addressing the perceivable limits of still photography and the photojournalistic forms associative of the era. The succession of non-linear silent film vignettes in Untitled (Structures) points to private spaces often unseen and explores landscape, interiority and notions of time. The film footage was shot on location in Memphis, TN, Chicago, IL, and Delta Region in Arkansas.
