D’Amelio Terras, New York
November 7 – December 23, 2009
D’Amelio Terras is pleased to present its fourth exhibition with Japanese sculptor Yoshihiro Suda. This gallery exhibition of new works coincides with the artist’s solo exhibition: “Yoshihiro Suda: In Focus,” on view at the Asia Society through February 2010.
Suda carves delicate plants from magnolia wood before hand-painting them with traditional Japanese pigments to produce hyper-realistic replicas of common plants and flowers. The artist calibrates the installation of his sculptures to engage out-of-the-way spaces and his work finds meaning in the encounters between object, environment, his sculpture and the viewer.
“The space around [my sculptures] is also part of the work,” Suda says. “Since ancient times, the relationship between form, color, space, and time has been referred to in Japan as ‘ma’. As I create my works, I think of them as expressing my own version of ‘ma’.”
Yoshihiro Suda’s work is represented in numerous public collections in Japan, Europe and North America. This year, Suda presented a solo-exhibition at The Contemporary Museum in Honolulu. Other solo exhibitions include the Palais de Tokyo in Paris in 2004; the Art Institute of Chicago in 2003; the Kyoto Biennial in 2003. Suda’s work has been featured in group exhibitions at La Colleción Jumex, Mexico City; Städel Museum Frankfurt; Palais de Beaux Arts in Lille, France and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Copenhagen. Permanent installations are on view at Neues Museum in Nuremberg and the Art House Project “Gokaisho” in Naoshima. Yoshihiro Suda lives and works in Japan.
