D’Amelio Terras, New York

From February 19 through March 25, D’Amelio Terras will present the first one-person exhibition of Japanese sculptor Yoshihiro Suda in the United States.
At the heart of Suda’s work there is an extremely accurate, life-size wooden sculpture of a plant, created with such surpassing skill as to make it indistinguishable from the real thing. These everyday flowers or weeds are placed in bold yet delicate installations that lure in the viewer while revealing only slight traces of the hand of their creator. At D’Amelio Terras, Mr. Suda will create three new site-specific sculptural installations, poetically following a flower’s fragile development from seedling to full bloom.
This past fall Mr. Suda had a one-person exhibition at the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, Japan. His work was also included in the 1998 Sydney Biennale, Australia, and in The Asian Exhibition at the Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh. Later this year, he will take part in The Greenhouse Effect at the Serpentine Gallery in London, England.
