From November 7 through December 6, D’Amelio Terras will present a one person exhibition of Brazilian photographer Miguel Rio Branco.
The photographs, realized between the mid seventies and 1994, form a series entitled Nakta meaning “Night” in Sanskrit. Approximately 20 works will be presented from this series along with a new large scale, multi-paneled piece.
A rich sense of color characterizes the work of Miguel Rio Branco – dense, saturated and contrastedê colors. David Levy Strauss in an essay published in Artforum (April 1997) writes: “Rio Branco’s is an art of contamination, contagion, and corrosion, but also of resistance and transcendence. He uses available light and supersaturated color to blur and penetrate the boundaries between the world of appearances and what it barely conceals. In that liminal zone, sacred and profane are mixed like blood and wine”.
Miguel Rio Branco was born in the Canary Islands and lives in Brazil. In 1996, he had one person exhibitions at the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro and Museu de Arte Moderna da Bahia and most recently was included in Site Santa Fe 1997.
