D’Amelio Terras, New York

D’Amelio Terras is pleased to present its third exhibition by New York-based artist Tony Feher.
Maybe features several floor sculptures that continue an exploration Feher’s work has engaged in recent years. The works investigate traditional sculptural issues of density, mass, composition and scale in combination with an appreciation and transformation of everyday materials. The show also represents a contrast to the lightness of this summer’s one-person exhibition at the Bard Center for Curatorial Studies Museum, where the artworks on display engaged the space in a spare and ethereal manner, floating above the floor in a wash of natural light. The works that comprise Maybe command a more physical presence, activating the space of the gallery and relating to the body of the viewer.
These floor works carry the historical weight of 1960s Minimalism with wit and understanding, allowing the viewer to delight in the pairing of Feher’s unconventional materials – plastic crates, bottles, marbles, coins and jars, among others – and recognizable forms. Maybe recontextualizes the detritus of everyday urban life, giving the objects we normally throw away a formal grace.
Feher’s work can be seen in a one-person exhibition at the UCLA Hammer Museum (November 13 through January 27, 2002) and in a one-person exhibition at the Worcester Art Museum beginning April 2002. A fully illustrated, eighty-eight page catalog published by the Bard Center for Curatorial Studies will be available for purchase in the gallery.
